Read fractions and tolerances
A tolerance is the allowed variation around a specified dimension. It depends on the task: a decorative gap and a precision mechanical fit have different requirements.
Convert fractions carefully and keep enough precision while calculating. Rounding each intermediate step can accumulate error. Check tool accuracy against a known reference when precision matters.
Worked example
12.0 mm ± 0.2 mm allows values from 11.8 to 12.2 mm.
Try it yourself
Mark 1/2, 1/4 and 1/8 on a drawn ruler and compare them.
Check your understanding
Which is within 12.0 mm ± 0.2 mm?
12.1 lies within the allowed range.
