Select and inspect hand tools
Choose the tool intended for the fastener or material. A driver must fit the screw head properly; a slipping or rounded tool can damage parts and cause injury. Inspect handles, tips and cutting edges before use.
Secure the workpiece and protect eyes when the task can eject material. Do not improvise around damaged tools or bypass guards. Power-tool training requires the specific manual and suitable supervision.
Worked example
A Phillips screw needs an appropriately sized Phillips driver, not a flat blade forced into the cross recess.
Try it yourself
Identify five hand tools and describe one appropriate use and one inspection check for each.
Check your understanding
Why match a driver to a screw?
Correct fit helps control the fastener; it does not remove all hazards.
