Area and volume
Area measures a surface in square units. Volume measures space in cubic units. A rectangle has area length × width; a rectangular box has volume length × width × height.
Convert dimensions to the same unit before multiplying. Do not confuse perimeter, which measures the distance around a boundary, with area inside it.
Worked example
A 3 m × 2 m floor has area 6 m² and perimeter 10 m. A 0.5 m deep box with that base has volume 3 m³.
Try it yourself
Draw a room, label its dimensions, and calculate its floor area and perimeter.
Check your understanding
What is the area of a 3 m by 2 m rectangle?
Area uses square units.
