Amplifiers and subwoofers

Plan amplifier compatibility using manufacturer-rated loads, output conditions and the system’s intended use. Speaker-level and line-level inputs serve different signal types. Match any interface to the radio and amplifier specifications.

Wire gauge, routing, protection and fuse placement are safety decisions based on the actual installation. Do not size a fuse solely from advertised speaker watts. Avoid universal wiring instructions for unknown vehicles.

Worked example

Two nominal 4 Ω single-voice-coil subwoofers in parallel form an approximate nominal 2 Ω load; the amplifier must be rated for that configuration.

Try it yourself

Draw a theoretical series and parallel subwoofer diagram and compare the nominal loads.

Check your understanding

Two 4 Ω loads in parallel give approximately what nominal load?
