Files, folders and backups
A filename helps identify a file; an extension often indicates its format. Organize files by purpose and use meaningful names with dates or versions when appropriate. Renaming an extension does not convert the file contents.
A backup is a separate recoverable copy. Test restoration of an unimportant file so you know the process works. Syncing can also sync accidental deletion, so sync alone is not always a sufficient backup.
Worked example
Name a project repair-notes-2026-10-12.pdf rather than final-final-new.pdf.
Try it yourself
Create a folder plan for three projects and describe how each would be backed up.
Check your understanding
Does changing .jpg to .pdf convert an image into a PDF?
A new extension does not rewrite the underlying format.
