Components and schematic symbols
A resistor limits current in suitable circuits. A capacitor stores energy in an electric field. A diode has direction-dependent behavior. Transistors can control current, and integrated circuits contain many components.
A schematic describes electrical connections, not the physical position of every part. Reference designators such as R1 and C1 identify parts in a parts list. Learn a symbol’s meaning before deciding how a device is wired.
Worked example
R1 = 1 kΩ means resistor number one with a nominal resistance of 1000 Ω. C1 = 10 µF identifies a capacitor value.
Try it yourself
Draw symbols for a resistor, capacitor and diode, then trace a simple battery-resistor loop on paper.
Check your understanding
What does 1 kΩ equal?
The prefix kilo means one thousand.
