Meters and low-voltage learning
A voltage measurement compares two points; current measurement places a suitable meter in the current path; resistance measurement requires a de-energized suitable circuit. Selecting a current range across a supply can cause a short.
For beginner practice, use simulated measurements or an instructor-approved current-limited low-voltage kit. Follow the meter manual for lead sockets, range limits and fuse ratings. Never infer that a device is safe solely because it is unplugged.
Worked example
In a simulation, a 3 V source and 300 Ω resistor produce 10 mA. The simulated voltage meter is connected across the resistor.
Try it yourself
Use the Circuit Detective game to predict current without touching live equipment.
Check your understanding
Where is a simulated voltage meter placed?
Voltage compares potential at two points; using current mode across a source is hazardous.
