Trace the audio chain
An audio system takes a source signal, selects and conditions it, amplifies it, and drives a speaker. A preamplifier handles signal-level tasks; a power amplifier supplies output suitable for speakers.
Check external connections and settings first using the equipment manuals. Start at a low listening level and avoid connecting outputs to incompatible inputs. Turn equipment off before changing wiring as directed by the manufacturer.
Worked example
If headphones work but one speaker does not, compare channel settings and permitted external connections before assuming the source is defective.
Try it yourself
Draw a source → preamp → power amp → speaker chain and label each function.
Check your understanding
Which stage drives loudspeakers?
A power amplifier provides suitable speaker output.
