Turntables and records
A turntable rotates the record at its specified speed. The stylus follows the groove and the cartridge converts motion into an electrical signal. Many magnetic cartridges require a compatible phono input with appropriate equalization.
Use the turntable and cartridge instructions for tracking force and setup. Do not guess stylus pressure or use household solvents. Record care and mechanical adjustment can affect both playback and wear.
Worked example
A turntable connected to an ordinary line input may sound unusually quiet if a required phono preamplifier is absent.
Try it yourself
Identify speed markings and locate the exact cartridge setup instructions.
Check your understanding
What may a magnetic cartridge require before a line input?
The signal level and equalization need appropriate conditioning.
