Cassette decks and symptoms
A cassette transport moves tape using coordinated reels, a capstan and a pinch roller. Playback speed, tape tension and head condition affect sound. Aging belts and contaminated mechanical parts are possible causes, not automatic diagnoses.
Do not force jammed tape or adjust internal mechanisms without the service instructions and suitable training. Cleaning methods depend on the material; an unsuitable solvent can damage rubber or plastic.
Worked example
Sound that changes pitch over time suggests speed instability, while muffled sound can have different causes including tape or head-path conditions.
Try it yourself
Record a fictional deck’s symptom, tape condition and whether the behavior occurs with more than one tape.
Check your understanding
Changing playback pitch suggests checking what category?
Pitch depends on tape speed, although diagnosis still needs evidence.
