Describe a symptom before a cause
Record what you observed, when it happens, and what changed recently. Separate facts from guesses. A stain can have several causes; replacing a part before diagnosing the source can waste money.
Start with external observations that do not expose electrical, gas, structural or pressurized hazards. Stop when the task exceeds your training. Use qualified tradespeople for regulated or hazardous work.
Worked example
Observation: water appears below the sink after the tap runs. Guess: the drain seal has failed. The observation should be recorded before the guess.
Try it yourself
Write a symptom report with location, timing, photographs needed and questions to ask.
Check your understanding
Which is an observation?
It reports what happened without assigning an unverified cause.
