Rates and proportions
A ratio compares quantities. A rate compares quantities with different units, such as miles per hour. A proportion states that two ratios are equal.
Find a unit rate to compare offers. Check that both prices describe the same size and quality, and include required fees. Proportional relationships multiply every input by a fixed factor.
Worked example
Three notebooks cost $6. The unit rate is $2 per notebook, so five notebooks cost $10 at the same rate.
Try it yourself
Compare 4 kg for $12 with 7 kg for $19.60 using cost per kilogram.
Check your understanding
At $2 per notebook, what do five notebooks cost?
Multiply the unit price by the number of notebooks.
