Place value and regrouping
A digit gets its value from its position. In base ten, ten ones make one ten and ten tens make one hundred. In 304, the zero holds the tens position; it does not make the number 34.
Addition combines quantities. Write like places in columns and exchange ten units for one unit in the next place. Check the total with an estimate before trusting the written answer.
Worked example
47 + 28: 7 + 8 = 15 ones, or 1 ten and 5 ones. Add 4 + 2 + 1 tens to get 75.
Try it yourself
Use drawings or coins to calculate 56 + 37, then estimate by rounding.
