Multiplication and division
Multiplication can represent equal groups or a rectangular array. Division can ask how many equal groups fit, or how much belongs in each group. Always identify which question a story is asking.
Division by zero is undefined. A remainder represents what is left after complete groups have been made; whether you round up depends on the real task.
Worked example
Twenty-five people travel in vans holding six people. 25 ÷ 6 = 4 remainder 1, so five vans are needed.
Try it yourself
Draw a 4-by-6 array and write two multiplication and two division facts.
Check your understanding
How many vans are required for 25 people at six people per van?
Four vans hold only 24 people, so another van is needed.
