Fractions describe equal parts
The denominator tells how many equal parts form one whole; the numerator tells how many of those parts you have. Parts must be equal to compare fractions fairly.
Equivalent fractions describe the same amount. Multiply numerator and denominator by the same nonzero number. To add fractions, first express them in equal-size parts.
Worked example
1/2 + 1/4 = 2/4 + 1/4 = 3/4. Adding denominators would change the size of the parts incorrectly.
Try it yourself
Draw one whole divided into four parts and shade three. Then draw the same amount in eighths.
Check your understanding
What equals 3/4?
Multiplying both numerator and denominator by two preserves the fraction.
