Main ideas and evidence

A main idea is the central point of a passage. Supporting details explain, illustrate or substantiate that point. Read the whole passage before deciding that its first sentence must be the main idea.

Separate a quotation from your interpretation. When making an inference, identify the clues and state what remains uncertain. Different texts can support more than one reasonable interpretation.
