CRT versus LCD and OLED

A CRT forms an image by directing electron beams toward a phosphor screen. An LCD controls light passing through liquid-crystal pixels and commonly uses a backlight. OLED pixels emit light themselves.

These technologies have different functional blocks and failure modes. A dark screen does not identify a single failed part. Model-specific documentation is necessary even for external diagnostics.

Worked example

An LCD can have an image-processing issue or a backlight issue; these are different systems even when both produce a dark-looking display.

Try it yourself

Draw separate functional block diagrams for CRT and LCD displays using descriptions, not wiring instructions.

Check your understanding

Which display commonly requires a separate backlight?
