Identify before applying power
Record brand, model, serial markings and visible condition. Old radios may be battery-powered transistor sets, transformer-powered tube sets or transformerless designs with hazardous chassis arrangements.
Do not plug in an unknown old radio to see whether it works. Damaged insulation, aged components and undocumented changes need assessment. Unplugging does not establish that stored energy has been removed.
Worked example
An intact cabinet does not prove the internal cord, insulation or power circuit is sound.
Try it yourself
Create a restoration intake sheet using only external photographs and labels.
Check your understanding
What is the first action with an unknown old tube radio?
